Abi absent from Day 7
Abi is out from day 7 for breaching Sumo’s infection mitigation restrictions after visiting a restaurant with friends on day 6. The decision to remove Abi from play was made by his oyakata (stablemaster) so that he can learn to make more responsible decisions in the future. It is unclear whether Abi’s absence from the July basho is temporary or permanent.
Enho vs Tamawashi
Enho fought against Tamawashi on day 7 of the July basho. It was the first meeting of the pair, however, they had hitherto scored 3 wins, 3 losses and 5 wins, 1 loss respectively in this tournament.
Shohozan vs Ikioi
In a bout that lasted almost 40 seconds, the pair went head to head for the 14th time, with ferocious tenacity on display from both wrestlers. Ikioi had the winning record with 9 wins and 5 losses against his lower ranked Maegashira #12 opponent, Shohozan.
Yūshō contenders extend their leads
Both Shin-Ozeki Asanoyama and Yokozuna Hakuho extended their leads today by defeating Takarafuji and Kiribayama respectively. Sekiwake Mitakeumi and Shodai are also in contention for the championship, with both rikishi posting victories today – albeit a win by default for Mitakeumi as he faced the absent Abi.
Asanoyama, Hakuho and Mitakeumi all have perfect scores in this tournament so far with 7 wins and 0 losses. Meanwhile, Shodai is bringing up the rear with 6 wins and 1 loss.
